INTERACTIVE COLLAGES AND IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING

GUY MADDIN'S “HAUNTED HOTEL”

Working together with Guy Maddin, we developed Guy's debut augmented reality art show for the BFI London Immersive Track 2023 alongside the BFI Film Festival, curated by Ulrich Schrauth.

2023
At the immersive art exhibition of the BFI London Film Festival 2023, the work "Haunted Hotel - A Melodrama in Augmented Reality" by Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin celebrated its world premiere.

We collaborated with the artist to build an augmented reality (AR) experience in which spectators could explore his multi-layered collage style and story.
The artworks, which are made out of cutouts from magazines and books, make their debut appearance in 3D space, adding a new stylistic dimension to the artist's narrative. The scenes drew people in, encouraging them to experiment with the alternative of

different visualisations. Visitors immersed themselves in the chaos and longing shown in this story from all angles, while a peculiar and carefully created soundscape by British composer Magnus Fiennes launched them into even greater depth. Along with the augmented reality software, we built a video and a mini-exhibition experience that could be easily moved between cities.

Each image functions as an AR marker and transforms into a 3D scene on the screen. The scenes are set to music by British composer Magnus Fiennes, which adds to the cinematic character of the AR experience. "Haunted Hotel" follows the cultural trend of restaging art and allowing visitors to perceive it interactively.

narration

In the melodrama Haunted Hotel – a story about secret betrayals and eavesdropping – augmented reality is deliberately used as a narrative stylistic device. Viewers of the artworks look through virtual peepholes and are encouraged to track down hidden content. In doing so, they explore the various layers and feelings of longing and madness that characterize the artworks.
